Cardboard boat regatta makes a splash (w/ video and gallery)

When hundreds turned out for the annual Float Yer Boat Regatta looking for fun, spills and thrills, they weren’t disappointed.

The annual Pell City Civitan-sponsored cardboard boat races at Lakeside Park Saturday had all of that and more.

Spectacular sinkings, innovative engineering and speedy sailing were all a part of the festivities as churches, businesses and organizations got in on the fun of building and racing boats made of only cardboard and duct tape.

There was no shortage of imagination in this year’s regatta. A steamboat complete with smokestack blowing real smoke, replicas of a runabout and a kayak, and a pirate ship with masts, sails and a crew that would rival Captain Hook’s were among the most notable.

It all went for a good cause — the Civitans’ efforts to raise funds for Toys for Children and local projects for Pell City citizens with developmental disabilities — and the turnout certainly fortified those efforts.

Our hats are off to the Civitans for a job well done, and we look forward to next year’s running of the Float Yer Boat Regatta.
